The Florey Medical Research Foundation

The Florey Medical Research Foundation is the fundraising and public affairs activity of the Medical Foundation of the University of Adelaide in respect to its role in support of the Adelaide Medical School.

All funds raised by The Florey Medical Research Foundation are deposited with The Medical Foundation and administered by it.

Strategic Plan

Goal 1
To identify the Adelaide Medical School's areas of excellence in teaching and research and promising areas of research which are not being funded.

Goal 2
To develop budget and capital fundraising programs to meet the needs identified in Goal 1.

Goal 3
To develop a public awareness program for The Florey Medical Research Foundation and for the Adelaide Medical School.

Goal 4
To become the sole recipient of grants, donations and bequests to the Adelaide Medical School.

Goal 5
The long term goal is to develop a large capital base, the post inflation net return on which will provide a major funding source for the Adelaide Medical School. This will largely be by bequests.


Goal 1
To identify the Adelaide Medical School's areas of excellence in teaching research and promising areas of research which are not being funded.

Strategy

  1. To receive from the Academic Dean (currently Professor Justin Beilby) regular advice of the major areas of research and teaching excellence and promising areas of research in the Adelaide Medical School, for the attainment of this goal.
  2. To obtain advice from any other source, within or outside the Adelaide Medical School, for the attainment of this goal.

Goal 2
To develop Budget and capital fund raising programs to meet the needs of Goal 1.

Strategy

  1. To establish a Fundraising and Public Affairs Committee.
  2. To identify the potential market for bequests and for major gifts which will produce a capital funding base.
  3. To use appropriate fund raising projects and public relations to win support from that market.

  4. To identify and implement appropriate budget fund raising projects to support specific Adelaide Medical School research projects and The Florey Medical Research Foundation administration costs.

Goal 3
To develop a public and community relations program for The Florey Medical Research Foundation and for the Adelaide Medical School.

Strategy

  1. The Fundraising and Public Affairs Committee will take on this goal.
  2. To develop short segments (15 to 30 secs) videos to introduce the Fund and the Medical School need to the public.
  3. To promote the image and successes of the Adelaide Medical School to the public at large.

  4. To unify the public relations efforts of the Adelaide Medical School to enhance the effectiveness of exposure.
  5. To pursue an aggressive public relations program giving The Florey Medical Research Foundation and the achievements of the Adelaide Medical School greater visibility, justifying and "advertising" its various programs, to stimulate public enthusiasm.
  6. To create a climate of philanthropy towards the Adelaide Medical School by exposure to prospective contributors to The Florey Medical Research Foundation and its support of the school's activities, people, plans and needs.

Goal 4
To become the sole recipient of community and business grants, donations and bequests to the Adelaide Medical School.

Strategy

  1. To implement organisational structures which simplify the receipt, management and disbursements of funds.
  2. To develop simple, workable lines of communication between departmental heads of the Adelaide Medical School and the Medical Foundation.

The Florey Medical Research Foundation Structure

Patron
Appointed by the Medical Foundation of the University of Adelaide after consultation with the Fundraising and Public Affairs Committee of The Florey Medical Research Foundation. Term of office is one year, renewable.

Chairman
The president of the Medical Foundation of the University of Adelaide

Supporters
Members of the Florey Group and board members and executives of organisation members of the Group, who wish to be supporters.
Governors of the Foundation.
Others deemed by the Fundraising and Public Affairs Committee as appropriate to be designated supporters.

Major Benefactors
Individuals or organisations donating $500,000 over a period of not more than 5 years, or through an agreed planned giving or bequest arrangement.

Benefactors
Individuals or organisations making a single donation of $100,000 or donating $250,000 over a period of not more than 5 years, or through an agreed planned giving or bequest arrangement.

Major Sponsors
Individuals or organisations donating $100,000 over a period of not more than 5 years.

Sponsors
Individuals or organisations donating $25,000 over a period of not more than 5 years.

Major Donors
Individuals or organisations donating on-off amounts of over $2,000 and up to $5,000.

Donors
Individuals or organisations donating amounts of up to $2,000 at any one time.


The Florey Medical Research Foundation Fundraising and Public Affairs Committee

Purpose
The prime purpose of this committee is to raise funds to support the Adelaide Medical School. An integral part of this fund raising is the establishment of community relations through promotion. (Strategic Plan Goal 3).

Chairman
Appointed for a period of 2 years by the Board of Governors of the Medical Foundation of the University of Adelaide.

Members
Appointed by the Medical Foundation of the University of Adelaide on nomination by the Chairman of the Committee.

The Chairman will work closely with the Executive Manager of The Florey Research Foundation, to select projects to achieve the goals and strategies of the Fund.

The Chairman will identify and recruit appropriate members for the Committee, to assist in the successful planning, implementation and management of these projects.

Such people should be prominent community members, of good standing, with the abilities and influence to achieve the results identified.

The appropriate people should encompass the following specialities and would be able to assist specific program areas. eg:

  1. Bequests - lawyers, accounting, trustee firms, financial and retirement counsellors
  2. Major gifts - prominent people from commerce, industry, retailing, advertising, marketing, banking and finance
  3. Cause-related marketing
  4. Community events - socially prominent and active people
  5. Public affairs and community relations - media, marketing and promotions, advertising, public relations
  6. Memorial gifts - funeral directors, cemetery trusts
  7. Professionally related - doctors, dentists, pharmacists, pharmaceutical companies, health insurance, hospitals, health industry.
A campaign Patron or Chairman may be appointed, from time to time, by the Medical Foundation, on the recommendation of the Committee, to figure a head and focus and driving force for particular short term campaigns.
